Withings is not new to smart devices. For the last 12 years, the French company has developed numerous products and medical devices, from smartwatches to smart scales, non-contact thermometers, and Blood Pressure Monitors (BPM). Withings is famous for its stylish design, it is no surprise that some of their products are sold physically in the Apple Stores.

High Blood pressure leads to serious health consequences such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney diseases, sexual dysfunction, etc. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), close to 45% of the United States population suffers from hypertension. In 2018, close to 500,000 people died in the US from the consequences of hypertension.

Knowledge is the key to detecting and controlling high blood pressure. Even though home monitoring is no substitute for a regular visit to the General Practitioner or cardiologist, the American Heart Association recommends checking your blood pressure at home for all people suffering from hypertension. In addition, it is essential for patients taking medications to lower the blood pressure to assess the treatment’s efficacy.

User friendly

To be truly effective in the long term, home blood pressure monitors must be easy to use. The Withings BPM Connect comes with a long arm strap that will accommodate any arm size (from 9 to 17 inches) and a tube containing all the electronics. It is beneficial for overweight people.

As with all blood pressure monitors, take care not to tighten the handcuff too much to avoid any pressure pain during the readings. The Health Mate app. can be downloaded both for iPhones or Android devices.

The Withings device connects painlessly via Bluetooth. Just press the unique button one time to turn it on. Press one more time to measure the systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate. After a couple of minutes, the results will appear on the device and synchronize automatically with the app.

It could not be simpler. It is also possible to take three measurements and to average the readings. To do so, press the button longer before starting the readings. It takes less than 3 minutes to proceed to three recordings.

According to the medical standards, the blood pressure levels will be defined as normal, elevated, high (stage 1 and 2), and hypertensive. The results will also appear on the easy to read LED matrix display on the tube. The value will be color-coded in green, orange, or red, depending on the level and the American Heart Association’s recommendations. The LED display may be a bit challenging to read in bright daylight, though.

Up to 8 different users can also use the wireless blood pressure monitor. In addition, the user’s name will be displayed on the LED screen on the tube. This can be especially useful for families.

Medically proven

Not only has the Withings BPM connect been developed in collaboration with cardiologists. The Food and Drug Administration has also approved the device. It has been clinically validated to ensure that the results are accurate and conform to medical standards.

As with any blood pressure monitor, the measure can sometimes be spurious when the arm’s cuff is not positioned correctly. The app. allows you to delete these inaccurate recordings to keep your recordings log clean.

Compared to the measurements provided by a smartwatch, no doubt that this blood pressure monitor will provide more accurate readings. Fitness watches use the Heart Rate Variability of the Electrocardiogram measure to define the blood pressure. Even though these measures are getting better, they will never be as reliable as a standard handcuff measure.

Health Mate App

The Health Mate app acts as an entire medical platform and integrates the data from the Blood pressure monitor and Whiting’s range of different devices. The data are also synced with the Apple Health platform. As a result, the data from the smartwatch and the smart scale will be displayed on a single platform.

The app allows sharing the daily measurements with your General Practitioner. It can be beneficial when considering the holistic nature of healthcare.

A high-quality device

On average, the battery lasts six months when fully charged and charges in less than 30 minutes via a mini-USB port.

The BPM connect is built using premium material and feels solid and durable. Will it be the soft touch of the plastic or the handcuff fabric, we did not find any flaw will it be for the design or the fabrication.

The cuff will wrap around the tube without any cumbersome tube or pump. Its slim design will make it convenient to bring with you when traveling. The premium price is, in our sense, entirely justified. In our opinion, the Withings BPM is the best Blood Pressure Monitor for 2024.
