Smart scales can not only help you track your weight. They also provide valuable information on body composition. Check our favorites for 2021.

Smart scale

I will tell you a secret. I’m not too fond of bathroom scales, smart or not. I find them depressing, and they always look at least 10 pounds wrong. I also found it really weird that my shirts are gradually shrinking. Don’t you have the same feeling?

What is great with the best smart scales we selected is that they go far beyond measuring the weight. They connect wirelessly to your phone and provide tons of data about the body composition, body mass index (BMI), heart rate, and can even track your weight gain during the pregnancy.

They are far less depressing than Grand Ma’s bathroom scale but are instrumental in any weight loss strategy or just for health and fitness. We tested models ranging from $20 up to $200. Is the huge price difference really justified?

What are the best smart scales for 2020 that deliver the best bang for the bucks? We selected three of the best models that we think will reconcile you with your weight and will certainly be your best allies to start the year 2021 with many good resolutions.

Even if Renpho is not the most famous name in smart healthcare products, this California-based company developed numerous smart devices. At $20, the Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale is not only very reasonably priced but is also Amazon’s #1 seller for digital scales. The design may not be as striking as the Big brands, but it does what it should, and it does really well. The bio-electrical independence pads track 13 body composition indicators. The scale connects via Bluetooth to the Renpho app. and is compatible with Samsung Health, Apple Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit apps. It will also help you track and share your progress towards your ideal weight. What more could we ask for?

Price when reviewed (standard / premium): $27.99 / $39.99

The Renpho smart body scale comes in two flavors: Standard or Premium and two colors: black or white. The main differences between the models relate to the technology used to measure the body parameters.

The standard model relies on classic bio-electrical impedance sensors. However, the premium Renpho scale will take advantage of Indium tin oxide (ITO) directly integrated into the tempered glass to provide a sensor-free, more stylish look. The use of ITO technology is also more accurate than the classic metal pad.

We have not been able to verify this claim tough. Our opinion is that the choice should be based more on the esthetic than on technology. The $10 difference is modest, though.

What is bio-electrical impedance?

All smart scales use bio-electrical impedance to send a low-level current between your left and right foot. The flow of this imperceptible current will be affected by the amount of water within the body.

In a nutshell, the fattier the tissues, the slower the transmission. So by estimating the ratio between water and fat, clever algorithms will extract various data about the body’s precise composition.

Use the app. to analyze your body and reach your goals

The app. is available on the Apple Store and Google Play and connects via Bluetooth to the scale. No need to bring your phone with you when measuring your weight and other data.

The scale will store the data and send them via Wi-FI to the app. It is good to know that your home WIFI should be at 2.4 GHz as it is not compatible with 5GHz networks.

The Renpho scale is smart enough to recognize up to eight different users and store the data accordingly.

Being compatible with most standard Health and Fitness apps, keeping track of your weight and body composition will become an integral part of your daily routine.

Track your body without breaking the bank

On top of the standard weight, BMI, and percentage of Body Fat, the Water Percentage, Fat-free Body Weight, Skeletal Muscle, Muscle Mass, Bone Mass, Visceral Fat, Subcutaneous Fat, Protein, Basal Metabolism, and Body Age are also measured.

The app. will offer plenty of graphs and statistics for data lovers. But, most of all, synchronization with Google Fit, Apple Health, or the Fitbit app is a great way to monitor your fitness, define specific goals, and monitor the progress while staying motivated.

The Renpho smart scales are powered by three AAA batteries that will last. In our opinion, this smart scale is a well-designed product that will answer all of your body composition, fitness, and weight measurement needs without breaking the bank.

Best overall

Just like any Withings product, the Body + scale combines impeccable design and great performances. The measurements are complete and precise. Pairing the scale with the Withings Health Mate app opens the door to new personalized programs to help lose weight or maintain it. No doubt that the Withings Body + is one of the best smart scales on the market.

Body + Scale by Withings

4.5 stars

Price when reviewed: $69.00

Withings is not new to the world of smart scales. They currently offer three models, the Body, Body +, and Cardio, that offer various physiological analyses. The Body + is the company flagship and has all we can expect from a modern smart scale.

The design is stylish, and the minimalist design will fit any bathroom or gym club. The tampered glass comes in white or black. The scale weighs 4.4 lbs and is only 0.9-inch height. Despite being light and slim, it feels like a high-quality built. The LCD screen is bright and easy to read, even in bright daylight.

No more reason to blame the scale

Precision is not taken lightly by Withings. The Body + offers a “position control” technology to ensure that the scale is properly adjusted and your stance optimal to deliver accurate readings.

Four arrows will light up in the corner of the screen if you need to adjust your feet a little bit for the center of gravity to be where it should be and the measures to be as highly precise as possible.

The Body + also adjusts the gravity of the earth depending on your location. Star Trek fans will certainly understand these subtleties better than I do, but the measurement will be perfect (in a 0.2 pounds range).

Precise Body composition measurements

Using bio-impedance technology, the Body + will provide a detailed analysis of your body composition and synchronize via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi with the company Health Mate app.

The scale will automatically recognize up to eight users. The data will be sent directly to their personal accounts and can even be added to a family account.

The Health Mate app. will also offer personalized advice and help the user understands how its activities have influenced their weight.

The measurements can also be synchronized automatically with your favorite health apps such as Apple Health, Fitbit, Google Fit, and MyFitness Pal.

Extra features

The baby mode will let parents follow the weight of their baby. The app. will even offer advice reviewed by obstetricians.

When used with a Withings activity tracker, the scale will also display the number of steps of the previous day to motivate users.

The world is multi-tasking, and the Withing Body + is no different. When connected via Wi-Fi, the scale will provide the daily weather report. This may not sound like critical information, but if you get into the habit of weighing yourself every morning, you will certainly appreciate this small plus.

The Withings Body + has everything: beauty, smart, and is very well priced. If you are on a quest for a new smart scale, choosing the Withings Body + is a no-brainer.

The QardioBase 2 is the last on our list of best smart scales for 2020. We loved the design, the accurate measures, the pregnancy mode, the compatibility with implanted medical devices. Despite a price point higher than the previous two nominees, we consider that the innovative design and technologies fully justify the price point. The QardioBase 2 is different from other smart scales and is the first step into the future of weight tracking.

Price when reviewed: $149.99

A new approach to weight measurements

The QardioBase 2 doesn’t look like a classic scale with its circular shape and lack of a screen. The 14.57 inches glass circle comes in white and black.

The information is displayed in the center of the scale using a range of bright green LEDs for easy reading. The scale also offers haptic feedback when the measures are completed.

If looking at a number feels depressing, you can also display the results using a smiley. We think it is a great way to stay motivated and not feel any guilt when using the scale.

Different modes for different needs

The QardioBase 2 is easy to set up and pair via Bluetooth and Wi-FI with the Qardio app. for iOS or Android. The app will ask you to choose between four smart modes: Normal, Weight only, Smart Feedbacks, and pregnancy.

  • Normal mode: Measures for your weight, BMI, body fat %, muscle, water, and bone mass,
  • Weight mode only: The bio-impedance functions will be disabled in case you have an implanted device such as a pacemaker,
  • Smart Feedback mode: Our favorite one. The progress and information will be displayed using smileys,
  • Pregnancy mode: The weekly evolution of the pregnancy will be displayed. The app. also offers the possibility to app photos for memories.

Multi-user friendly

Like the other smart scales on this list, the QardioBase 2 can detect up to eight users and record their measures accordingly. However, unlike most scales, the QardioBase 2 comes with a micro-USB for charging the rechargeable battery that will last up to 12 months.

The scale can recognize up to eight users automatically and will even remember their favorite mode.

At $149.99, the QardioBase 2 is the most expensive smart scale we tested. Considering all-new features, this price is fully justified for high quality and a truly different scale.
